Yes, you should meet your pencils before you use them in a product! Creating color swatches gives you the chance to experience how they blend, their color pigment, how they work on your particular preferred paper, etc! Lots of things that you really would prefer to know before hitting a project with them!

I have two specific sets of pencils that I’m not crazy about, but I’ve swatched them and that’s how I realized they just didn’t work well for me. I’ve set them aside for when my 5 year old cousin comes over, so he has something to keep him occupied

Missing a pencil? Maybe you’re running low on some colors that you really don’t want to actually run out of until you run out of it? If you’re using your charts, you’ll know pretty quickly when your favorite colors are running low. I know I have a few pencils that I use in all my drawings, and it’s my worst nightmare to run out of that Polychromos Indigo Blue!

I like to highlight the colors that have poor lightfast ratings, so I have that info on hand. I still use them, but I limit them to work I’m not selling or if I feel like working in a coloring book
